Hot Topic Theme: Work Integrated Learning and External Partnerships
Over half of new Australian PhDs work outside of higher education, and this number is on the rise!
A diverse range of industries and organisations rely on research or research skills to solve real-world problems, including business, government, cultural and community organisations. Industry collaborations are becoming an important part of academia as well. At UTS we want our HDRs to be ‘world ready’.
A placement with an external organisation provides HDR students with the opportunity to engage with industry, shape research thinking in line with real-world problems, develop strong professional capabilities, and enhance their professional networks and career prospects. When we say industry – we think expansively about this as ‘industries’ including government, business and community.
How might we better create space and support for HDRs to undertake real-world placements with external partners?
What are the current barriers?
This workshop is an opportunity for HDR students, supervisors and the wider UTS community to discuss the kind of culture and programs that would help HDRs be as prepared as possible for future impactful career paths, of whatever shape they want to pursue.
Guest Speakers
A.Prof Alex Munt, Acting Dean GRS: HDR Strategic Development
Dr Sarah Kinkel, Researcher Development Manager, GRS
