Hot Topic Theme: Feedback and Assessment

As educators, we want to support our students in becoming independent and self-regulated learners. A key aspect of this is their development of evaluative judgement, and by this, we mean their capacity to employ a range of strategies to make informed decisions about the quality of their work,  preferably before they submit it for marking. Carefully designed teaching, feedback and assessment strategies can help them to develop this capacity. The more we explicitly integrate these into our learning environments, the better our students get at making informed judgements about the quality of their own work and others. And who doesn’t want that?

In this webinar, we will introduce the research related to evaluative judgment, introduce the pedagogical device of comparison, and hear from two guest speakers who are working with these ideas in practice: Dr Donna Rooney, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Dr Genevieve Wilkinson in the Faculty of Law.

Guest Speakers

Dr Donna Rooney

Dr Donna Rooney is a Senior Lecturer in professional learning in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Donna coordinates and teaches two subjects in the new OPM Masters of Education (Learning and Leadership). She will be presenting on her work in one of these subjects that features a session-long blogging task.

Dr Genevieve Wilkinson

Dr Genevieve Wilkinson is a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Technology Sydney. She teaches in the areas of intellectual property law, human rights, technology law and international law. Genevieve co-convenes the Faculty of Law Learning and Teaching Seminars and is passionate about using technology innovatively in learning and teaching.

What are Hot Topics?

Hot Topics are curriculum and teaching themes that have emerged in UTS from student learning experiences, student feedback surveys (SFS), consultations and other strategic projects. They are a series of professional development and engagement opportunities to enhance courses and provide longer-term support through community building and sustained critical dialogues.

The program is open to UTS casual academics who are teaching in Spring session 2021. You are invited to participate in up to TWO of these online professional development workshops and be paid for your time*. Please note that there are caps on some workshops. 

 *Paid places are at the Other Academic Activity non-PhD rate of $49.47. This is a professional learning opportunity, not a teaching activity.

Please note: Staff who are in full-time or fractional academic employment at UTS in addition to their casual academic contract are not eligible for payment.
