Similar to any assessment task, creating a video assessment task in Canvas requires you as the subject coordinator use the Assignment area. Follow the instructions below to set this up a video submission point for your students:
Set up assessment tasks
- In your subject’s Assignments area, click + Assignment.
- Enter an assignment title.
- In the assignment details, enter (or link to) clear instructions for students telling them what and how to submit (see below).
- In Submission Type settings, select Text Entry. This will enable students to use the Rich Content Editor to submit their video assignment file through Kaltura, and ensure that Canvas site storage is not consumed.
How students submit their video assessments
Direct students to the blue ‘Start Assignment’ button in Canvas. Students will then be able to use the Rich Content Editor to submit their work via one of the following methods:
- Tools > Apps > View All > Embed Kaltura Media: This is the recommended method for student video submissions. If the option to ‘Embed Kaltura Media’ is not visible, select View All. Kaltura is integrated into Canvas and is designed to handle large media files. You view the timestamped video submission in Speedgrader for marking.
- External Link: Use this if you’ve asked students to submit their video to an external streaming platform, e.g. Microsoft Stream, YouTube. The marker will view the video by clicking on the external link.
- Upload/Record Media: Students can upload media files up to 500MB using this method. However, intermittent server issues can occur, so it should only be used for very short videos only. The marker will view the embedded video in Speedgrader.
- Upload Document: Each student can upload a file up to 5GB. However, this approach is not recommended as the videos won’t preview in SpeedGrader, and the marker will need to download each video individually to view them.
It’s important to provide clear submission instructions to students. Editable instructions are available for you to download from Canvas Commons.
To find and import video submission instructions into your Canvas site:
- In Canvas, select ‘Commons’ from the global navigation menu.
- In the Commons search bar, search for “video assessment”.
- Click on ‘How To Submit a Video Assessment in Canvas.’
- To import and view the resource in your own Canvas site, follow the instructions here.
- Once the resource is imported to your own site, add it to an existing Module so students can see it. Go to your Modules area, click the + button on the Module you need, choose the type of resource you’re adding to the Module (e.g., Page, Discussion), then select ‘How To Submit a Video Assessment in Canvas’ from your list of existing pages.

As other types of assessments, students can also be encouraged to peer review to receive formative feedback on their work. For example, to increase class engagement with video assessment, the Canvas Discussion Board can be used as a shared ‘gallery’ and is an ideal place for students to provide peer feedback and reflections on video work.
