An exam shell is a placeholder for your final exam in Canvas. It includes the name of the exam, due date, point value and any other settings for the exam.
An exam shell is required to allow SAU to add any special accessibility provisions for identified students as required for that exam.
If you have opted for an AI-invigilated exam this session, please continue to step 3 and 4. Otherwise skip to step 5.
Toggle ProctorU to ‘On’. (You must have, and be logged into, ProctorU to enable this.)
Toggle Auto generated password to ‘On’.
ProctorU will automatically generate a password for you
Do not provide the password to students.
ProctorU will automatically input the password for the student when they begin their exam in Guardian browser.
Select Marked Quiz.
Assign to the relevant Assignment Group.
(Optional) If you have multiple choice questions in your exam, select ‘Shuffle answers’ to shuffle the order of how your answer options are presented to students. Leave unchecked if your answer options contain answers like ‘All of the above’.
Set the duration allowed for your exam.
Allow Multiple Attempts as needed:
for AI-invigilated exams 2 attempts must be allowed.
Please advise students that they should use the second attempt if they had experienced technical issues/exceptional reasons with their first attempt. If used, evidence of the technical issue experienced may be required.
For timed LMS exams 1 or more attempts may be allowed, at the subject coordinator’s discretion.
Do not allow students to see their quiz responses.
(Optional) Show one question at time, if it is suitable for your exam design.
Deselect ‘Lock questions after answering’ unless there are questions later in the exam that provide students with hints that will alter the answer of their earlier questions.
Enter the due date/time to match the end of your availability window, as per exam schedule.
Enter the dates/times of your exam’s availability window, as per exam schedule.
Select ‘Save & Publish’ (if you are ready) or ‘Save’ (if you’re not ready).
Useful tip
SAU prefers to have exams published as it enables them to add provisions such as ‘extra time’ for students with special exam provisions.
Check that results are hidden from students
In Marks / Gradebook, check that the relevant exam name column is set to ‘Manual’. It is recommended that marks are not posted immediately and only released after the scheduled release of results found in the UTS calendar. This allows adequate time for marking and grade ratification etc.
