Meet the new UTS Video Community of Practice: a highlight reel - LX at UTS

On November 21st 2019, the LX.lab Media Team held a meet-up to launch the new UTS video community of practice. This community aims to encourage the use of DIY video in the classroom. We aim to introduce new ideas, and also provide support for DIY video. Our first event featured two presentations, followed by an open conversation and biscuits.

There was a great turn out for the very first UTS video community of practice meet-up.

Our first speaker was Dr. Amanda White. Well, sort of! Amanda was speaking at a conference that day, but didn’t want to miss out so she joined us via video presentation. For those in the know, Amanda has come a long way with her successful YouTube channel (over 27,000 subscribers!) and she gave us some inspiring tips. You can check out the video below.

Next up we had Patrick Abela, a Teaching and Learning Officer from the faculty of Health, who spoke on filming practical demonstrations. Health are doing great work in this area, filming simply on iPads and using video within classroom activities. In one example, he showed how video was used to demonstrate good and bad patient interaction in regards to clinical skills. One video would be shown in class with a nurse making multiple errors that students would have to identify. Afterwards, students would be shown a second video containing the same footage, but now with a text overlay identifying the errors as they occurred in real time. This is a great example of how video can be used within pedagogical practice and we hope to highlight more examples like this in the future!

Patrick Abela presents at the UTS video community of practice meet-up in November 2019.

We had a great time and would like to thank everyone for coming. For those interested in attending our next event in February, you can register here. More info to come in early 2020.
