High quality: UTS leads in learner engagement and learning resources - LX at UTS

What is QILT?

Each year the Commonwealth government asks students around the country about their experiences at their higher education institution. It’s called the Student Experience Survey (SES) and it gives higher education professionals and students a transparent view of how each university performs in different areas. The aggregated results of the SES are then published in an online dashboard on the government’s QILT website.

The results for UTS

The results of the survey are separated into Undergraduate and Postgraduate, and then into a number of categories. We’re excited to see outstanding results particularly in the learner engagement and learning resources categories, where we are in the leading group and first in the Sydney metropolitan region. Here are some highlights from the results:

  • Learner engagement – in the top group and first in Sydney metropolitan for undergraduate and postgraduate
  • Learning resources – in the top group and first in Sydney metropolitan for undergraduate and postgraduate
  • Overall education experience – first in Sydney metropolitan for postgraduate and second for undergraduate
  • Teaching quality – second in Sydney metropolitan for postgraduate and have made significant improvement since 2017 for undergraduate
  • Student support – first in Sydney metropolitan for postgraduate and second for undergraduate
  • Response rate – a huge increase from 23.6% in 2017 to 42.9% in 2018 (a lift of 19.3%)

Professor Shirley Alexander, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students) has said “this is wonderful news for UTS. We have worked hard on improving the academic and extracurricular student experience, and listened to student feedback to inform our priorities. The outstanding results in learner engagement and learning resources, particularly, are evidence of the success of our learning.futures strategy, which emphasises active learning. We’re supporting students to develop the skills they need for the jobs of the future, and to have a great time while they do it.”

The SES is the only comprehensive survey of current higher education students in Australia. Around 194,000 undergraduate students and 89,000 postgraduate coursework students from Australian universities and non-university higher education institutions (NUHEIs) participated in the 2018 SES. The survey collects information that helps both higher education institutions and the government improve teaching and learning outcomes, and reports on multiple facets of the student experience.
