5 tips for creating infographics with impact - LX at UTS

Creating infographics can be a great new way to present your content. They can be used to tell a story with data or make a complicated topic easier to understand. Here are some tips to making great infographics for any audience.

Keep content concise

Simplify your content into key points. Make sure your infographic is easy to read and is engaging for a viewer. The less content you include, the higher the impact is on the viewer.

Consider your audience

Consider accessibility needs of the audience. Choose a typeface that is easy to read and keep your text size large. Make sure you are using a colour palette that has high contrast. Additionally, make sure your content is appropriate and interesting for your audience.

Tell a story

Engaging infographics should tell a story. Infographics should have a clear structure with a well-defined beginning, middle and end. This should be shown visually in the structure of your infographic. For example, in a vertical infographic the reader starts at the top of the page and works their way down.

Show storytelling in infographics by clearly defining beginning, middle and end.

Avoid distracting visual elements

Make sure any visual elements e.g. icons and graphs, you use in your infographic help to communicate the story. Do not add decorative elements that will just distract from the core message.

If there is too much irrelevant content in infographics people will miss the key details.

Test it

Show your infographic to other people to get a fresh perspective. This will help you make sure your infographic makes sense and your point is communicated well.
