Your top questions about setting up online exams answered - LX at UTS

The final assessment period is just around the corner, and setting up your Canvas quizzes for a formal online exam can be a confusing task. If you are setting up a formal online exam for the first time you may want to check our Online Exams collection. If you have a formal online exam that’s almost ready to go then this blog will respond to some general questions about online exam setups. Whether you are using ProctorU or not, this blog will make sure you’re well-prepared.

For all types of exams (AI Invigilated exams, Timed LMS exams, Take home exams) in the formal exam period

1. Why is my exam not visible to students or a specific student?

Double-check in advance that your exam will be visible to students on the day.

  • If your Exam is within a ‘Module,’ make sure that module is published.
  • Ensure your exam is Published with a ‘Available from’ and ‘Available to’ date. Please note that publishing your exam won’t make it immediately available to students if you have set specific availability dates. Learn how to add these dates through Canvas by referring to this guide: How do I make a Canvas quiz tool available before or after the due date?.
  • Additionally, within your exam settings, confirm that you have entered the correct available dates E.g. Sometimes it might be accidentally set as the previous year.
  • If you have specific students or groups of students attempting the exam at different times, use the ‘assign to’ setting to help you with this. You can refer to this Canvas guide for more information: How do I assign a Canvas quiz tool to an individual student?.

2. Why do some students have additional time set for the exam?

For formal exams some of your students will likely be provided with reasonable adjustments, like extra time or adjusted finish times, for accessibility reasons. These provisions are entered into your exam by the Exams team. Please do not remove them! If you have questions or need assistance please contact the Exams team at exams@uts.edu.au or through Exams Provisions site.

3. Where can students seek support if they run into technical issues?

For urgent student support during exams, when they are unable to access their exams or any other types of technical issues, contact the exams hotline on 9514 3222.

For an AI invigilated exam

1. How do I allow students to view specific web pages for an AI invigilated exam?

You can whitelist a website, which will allow students to visit the website during the exam. However it does not apply on every single page on the website. As an example if you whitelist https://canvas.uts.edu.au/ it will only apply to just that link, and not any other pages.  This would also apply to library resources or ebooks accessed through the library.

If students need to access content within the canvas course site, you can enable ‘Course Website’ and set recommended Browser tabs to ‘Allow’. This will make the entire Canvas course to be accessed during the exam, without needing to add a whitelist requirement.

2. How do I prepare my students for an AI invigilated exam?

Students should familiarise themselves with the process of setting up and using ProctorU on their device prior to exam day. Students have the option to take a practice exam which can be accessed through their Canvas home dashboard.

If your students do not have access to the Exams practice canvas site, please contact the Exams team at exams@uts.edu.au or Exams Provisions site.

We also recommend that you share the UTS Student guide for online exams  with your students. Hopefully some of these common questions have helped you to be well-prepared for the upcoming exam period.  If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us through a ticket with LX.lab.
